Hey there,

Most athletes think they’re training hard enough mentally just by going to practice—but they’re not.

Not even close.

Most dedicate less than 10% of their training time to the mental game.

Here’s the truth: it’s not your physical game that separates winners from everyone else.

It’s your mental game.

Athletes at every level underestimate how much mindset training impacts their performance. The mind is just like a muscle, and yet, most athletes train their bodies while leaving their mental muscles weak and unconditioned.

That’s a problem when things get tough. You’ve been told to grind, push harder, and just power through. But what happens when that grind hits the wall? What do you do when your motivation dies out? Or when pressure turns into fear?

That’s where mindset training comes in. I’ve worked with top athletes—NBA players, NFL champions, Olympic hopefuls—and I can tell you, the difference between those who excel and those who stay average is what’s happening upstairs.

What we’re going to talk about today:

  • Why mental strength isn’t just about “pushing through.”

  • The three most critical mental skills every athlete needs to master for mental toughness.

  • How mindset training can transform your performance, even if you’re already great.

Ready to dive in?

If you’re stuck in your training, if you feel like you’re almost there but not quite hitting your peak, mindset training might be exactly what you’re missing. Here’s what you need to start improving your mental game:

3 Steps to Build Mental Strength and Outperform Your Competition

To achieve excellence, you’re going to need more than just talent and hard work. You’re going to need mental strength—the kind that keeps you focused when things get tough, the resilience to bounce back after failures, and the clarity to stay composed under pressure.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Master Self-Regulation

Self-regulation is your ability to stay cool when everything around you is falling apart — to have control over your thinking, feeling, and behavior.

It’s easy to stay focused when things are going well, but how do you react when they’re not?

To train this, you need to practice handling your emotions in low-stress situations. That sets you up to handle the big moments, via a process psychologists call “inoculation”.

Tactically, this might be as simple as deep breathing when you’re frustrated during practice or visualizing yourself staying composed in high-stakes scenarios. With enough practice, you’ll be ready to take on higher, harder challenges.

2. Build Decision-Making Skills Under Pressure

When the clock is ticking down, and the game is on the line, can you make the right call? Decision-making under pressure is a skill, and it can be trained.

Try putting yourself in time-pressured drills where you’re forced to make quick decisions. The more you do this in practice, the easier it becomes when it really matters.

3. Develop Resilience

Resilience isn’t just bouncing back. It’s about seeking growth, even when growth seems hard. It’s about learning from mistakes, iterating, and improving.

True resilience means embracing failure as part of the journey and using it to fuel future success.

To build resilience, start reflecting on your setbacks. What went wrong? What did you learn? What can you do differently next time? This process builds mental toughness over time.

Here’s what you learned today:

  • Your mindset is a muscle—train it as much as your body.

  • Mental strength isn’t just about pushing through; it’s about self-regulation, decision-making, and resilience.

  • With the right mental game, you can take your performance to levels you didn’t even know were possible.

Start applying these skills now. Pick one—whether it’s mastering your emotions, improving your decision-making under pressure, or building resilience—and work on it every day.
