3 Ideas

  1. An underrated challenge of a head coach or leader: keep the messaging novel and consistent at the same time. You need varied packaging for one idea so that the team hears it over and over, without getting bored.

  2. Sport psych’s effectiveness is a function of how well the practitioner can align with the team. Do your own thing, and you’ll struggle to make an impact. Put your spin on the team’s goals, and you can make a bigger difference than you’d imagine.

2 Tips

  1. If you want to practice something, develop an imagery script around it. Record and listen. Imagery is like mental reps. The more you practice, the better you perform. The visualizations I’m using in my work with teams right now:

  • Ideal future self

  • Overcoming obstacles

  • Finding flow

Each of these can help you improve your performance.

  1. I’m working with a team right now that’s trying to block the outside noise on game day.

My suggestion? Focus on how the team talks to each other.

You can’t change what a fan is saying (or your coworker behind your back), but a good team can help each other recenter on the right things instead of fueling the negativity.

Never say never, because limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.
